Research programme: Biomarkers
In healthy people, there is a balance between various kinds of physical processes.
Disorders like CRPS can change this balance, with changes in the biochemical composition of certain body fluids as a possible effect. Little is known about the exact mechanisms and changes in body fluids in case of CRPS patients.
The TREND research in this field strongly relies on pharmacotherapeutic studies aiming at clarifying specific aspects of CRPS, being neurogenic inflammation and central sensitisation. One team focuses on the study of blister fluids (BF), another team on cerebro-spinal fluids (CSF). If these teams do manage to identify relevant biomarkers, then the sensitivity and specificity of these biomarkers will be characterized.
