26.01.10 - Referral and treatment not always as planned
CRPS patients are treated by various medical specialists. De Mos and others (Erasmus MC Rotterdam) did a study on the way patients are referred and treated in the Netherlands. The findings have recently been published in Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica .
The Dutch guidellines state that CRPS should be treated by ‘free radical scavengers’ in combination with non-invasive therapy. Only half of 102 patients in this study said they had received these ‘scavengers’ in the first 3 months of their treatment.
Because 2 out of every 3 patients first went to their general practitioners, they should be encouraged to start treatment and follow the guidelines.
