30.09.09 - Parts of HLA system possibly play a part in CRPS
For many inflammatory diseases, like CRPS, associations have been found with a certain part of the human genome, known as the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) system.
De Rooij and others from the LUMC in Leiden did a study with 150 CRPS patients with fixed dystonia. They found that two alleles (parts of the genes), HLA-B62 en HLA-DQ8, were significantly correlated with this specific group of patients. This might indicate that these alleles play a role in the onset of and susceptibility for the disease. Before this conclusion can be reached the results should be replicated in other studies in the future.
The results have recently been published in Pain:
de Rooij AM, Gosso MF, Haasnoot GW, Marinus J, Verduijn W, Claas FHJ, van den Maagdenberg AMJM, van Hilten JJ. HLA-B62 and HLA-DQ8 are associated with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome with fixed dystonia. Pain 2009, 145:82-85.
