18.11.10 - Evidence based guidelines for complex regional pain syndrome type 1
Treatment of complex regional pain syndrome type-1 (CRPS-1) often is subject to discussion. A Dutch multidisciplinary taskforce has recently published evidence based guidelines developed for treatment of CRPS-1.
Task force members from medical and paramedical disciplines involved in the treatment of CRPS evaluated CRPS literature up to 2006. Standardized physical therapy, pain medication and use of free radical scavengers in the early phase and for prevention are described as core interventions for CRPS. Based on the literature identified, and the extent of evidence found for therapeutic interventions for CRPS-1, the authors concluded that further research is needed into each of the therapeutic methods discussed in the guidelines.
