20.10.08 - Cytokines only partly responsible for CRPS
Previous studies showed that the concentrations of the proinflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL6 are higher in CRPS patients.
Wesseldijk, Huygen, Heijmans-Antonissen, Niehof en Zijlstra showed that after 6 years the concentrations of these cytokines have decreased, but this did not result in a decrease in pain. de TNF-α and IL6 play a part in CRPS, but are not fully responsible for the total disease.
The researchers published their results in Mediators of Inflammation: ‘Six years follow-up of the levels of TNF-α and IL-6 in patients with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome’.
