8.01.10 - Only very small increased risk in siblings of CRPS patients

If genetic factors play a role in a disease, it could mean that siblings of patients have an increased risk of developing that disease compared to the general population. This has not been studied before for Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS).

De Rooij and others asked 405 CRPS patients about the occurence of CRPS in their siblings. The aim of the study was to assess the sibling recurrence risk. The results of this study showed that there was no elevated risk for the entire group. The risk for the group under the age of 50 was increased however. Because the risk of developing the disease in that age group is relatively small, siblings of CRPS patients do not need to worry.

The results of this research have recently been published.
